Our history of partnership

Since Hallite’s birth in 1903 we have had partnership at the heart of our company, giving our customers complete confidence in the performance of their hydraulic cylinders, producing premium seals, wipers and bearings of proven quality, and delivering them across the world.

The brand has an enviable track record in innovation. Our success has been built on a reputation for safety and reliability. We offer our customers the best of both worlds, a local team they get to know and trust, together with the support and technical capabilities of our global network.

1903

The original partnership

Our spirit of collaboration comes from the original partnership of the Hall Brothers who, together with their partner A.H.Aaron, began trading as Hallite Douglas Ltd from two small offices on the third floor of a building at 105 Leadenhall Street, London EC3.

1904

The Hallite brand is registered

The Hallite brand was registered.

1920s

The first site

Originally based in East London, the enterprising brothers moved the partnership to the Oldfield Works in Hampton, where one of our global manufacturing centres has been ever since. Personally committed to customers and employees alike, the Hall & Hall partnership continued its success, with ‘Hallite’ becoming a reliable trademark of quality, with a growing reputation in the UK market and beyond.

1939

WWII

The onset of WWII saw the site being used as an ‘Air Raid Precautions Centre’. Throughout the war years the Company continued to trade across international borders, and sustained war damage on a number of occasions. The Company’s products were classed as essential for the war effort, and day and night shift working took place.

1947

Mining

The company began trading with the National Coal Board and today still supplies products to the UK and international mining industries.

1953 - 1960

The first patents

  • Hallite files a patent for the single-acting fluid seal called the ‘Hallprene Patent Fluid Seal’ in the 1953 Hallite Handbook. This design later became known as the Hallite Type 18.
  • Hallite registers patent for the double-acting piston seal
1960s & 1970s

Global expansion of the brand

During the 1960s Hallite established a manufacturing centre in the USA as well as distribution centres in Australia and France.

During the 1970s further distribution centres were established in Germany and Canada.

Hallite was expanding globally through the spirit of partnership, maintaining a spirit of coordinated autonomy between its local companies whilst getting closer to its customers without compromising on quality. That spirit of collaboration between the Hallite companies still characterises Hallite today.

1980

Hallite Seals Ltd.

The Company’s name was changed from Hall & Hall Ltd. to Hallite Seals Ltd and the double H logo made its first appearance.

1980s

A history of ‘firsts’

  • The Hallite 730 seal is introduced. This marks the start of a new era in seal mining leg cylinders. The new design includes polyester face rings in combination with NBR energizers, supported by active, split POM AE rings.
  • 506 bearing
    • Tight tolerances
    • Available in ready-made bearings cut to size and to customer specifications
    • Available in spiral lengths and flat coils
    • Low friction
1986

605 rod seal

  • General purpose rod seal
  • Robust design
  • Excellent wear resistance
  • Increase seal stability
  • Performs well over wide temperature range
  • and is extremely effective in low temperatures
  • Primary lip protection
  • Easy to install
1988

Focusing our expertise

Hallite became part of Wellington Holdings plc.

1988

754 piston seal

The Hallite 754 piston seal is launched. The first compact piston seal design from Hallite using all moulded components

1989

716 TPE face rod seal

The Hallite 716 TPE face rod seal is launched as part of a solution for Vee pack housing that requires no maintenance and service for up to 6 years.

1990s

During the 1990s Hallite established another distribution centre in Europe and acquired Dynamic Seals in the USA.

1997

The Hallite 846 “Intelligent Wiper” was introduced

Hallite introduces the 846 “Intelligent Wiper” featuring Umbrella Wiper Technology, a protective debris guard flap on the wiping lip that entirely covers the gland housing and prevents the water/slurry trap that is common with conventional wipers. This feature offers added protection to the integrity of the hydraulic system by reducing corrosion and preventing the ingress of contamination into the wiper housing groove. The design minimises the oil transfer out of the ram on the cylinder rod by collecting traces of fluid passing the rod seal.

2001

764 compact piston seal

Hallite introduces the 764 compact piston seal.

2005

Wellington Holdings plc was acquired by Fenner plc. Fenner Sealing Technologies Hallite became a part of Fenner Advanced Sealing Technologies.
